Bowe Bergdahl is Coming Home

Bowe Bergdahl is Coming Home

In forming opinions, we each bring our own life experience to every situation we encounter.  When I confront human rights issues, I do so as a mother, a former teacher, a person of faith and as a liberal.  Consequently, I am overjoyed that Bowe Bergdahl is coming home to his family.  I can’t imagine the pain his parents have suffered for the past five years.  As a mother  I feel their anguish.

There is apparently some mystery surrounding Bowe’s capture and I presume that that will have to be sorted out eventually.  However, the United States of America has sent an important message to our men and women in uniform, as well as to the world, and that is that we will do anything and everything in our power to protect our soldiers and to bring them home.

I know that there are some who believe that we should not have engaged in a prisoner exchange, but I don’t agree with that philosophy. One difference between a democracy and a dictatorship is that in a democracy we feel an obligation to take care of each other. That’s why we have agencies in place to help the poor, the sick, the injured, et cetera. You can argue that we have put terrorists back on the streets to harm us at a future time, and perhaps there is some truth to that … but more important to me is the fact that the United States has shown its humanity, and that’s what makes us the country that so many immigrants want to be part of.

As an American citizen, I am proud of what we have done.  Five years is a long time to be imprisoned in a foreign culture.  I have a cousin who was a German POW during World War II.  He is about 90 at this point in time and has never been able to put that experience behind him.  Perhaps no one can, but I pray that Bowe Bergdahl  is able to come back to his family in good health both mentally and physically as soon as possible.
